Obituary

Reverend Eric Wellington King was a prophetic messenger, passionate and creative leader, social activist, educator, and devoted servant of Jesus Christ. He was committed to empowering and transforming the lives of those who are under-served and disenfranchised.  From Baltimore to Montgomery County, Maryland, Eric offered his service to influence, inform, empower, and transform communities. Before his retirement in 2022, Rev. King served twenty-five years in pastoral ministry in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church as the pastor of Ames UMC (Bel Air, MD), and St. Matthews New Life UMC (Baltimore, MD), Metropolitan UMC (Baltimore, MD), Goshen UMC (Gaithersburg, MD), and McKendree-Simms-Brookland UMC (Washington, D.C).

 

Born on June 20, 1958, Eric was the eighth child of the late Julia Redmond and Calvin Wellington King. His birth and developmental years took place in the Harlem Park community of West Baltimore, MD. Eric graduated in 1976 from Edmonson High School, then earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowie State University in 1981 and a Master of Divinity Degree from Howard University School of Divinity in 1994. In 2013, Eric was in the first cohort to earn certification for Community Organizing and Development from the University of Baltimore.  Eric also served for three years as an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at Morgan State University. Rev. King served 25 years in the Baltimore City.

 

Eric leaves to celebrate his love and legacy, wife Twanda Evette King; sons Eric, II (N’Jameh), Bryant (Brittany), and Aston; grandchildren Taylor Morgan King, Xavier Wellington King, Tori Marlene King, and Brixton Wellington King; ‘bonus” grandchildren Tristen Atlee, Taliyah Jefferson, Ashlynn Thomas, Trinity Crosby, and Xan Crosby; “bonus” daughter Ashata (Timothy) Crosby; siblings Anton Sawyer, Kathy White (Lawrence), and Andrea King and a village of beautiful family and friends.
