The Life, Legacy and Leadership of Rev. Dr. Gordon H. Young, Sr.

On July 24, 1954, Gordon Haswell Young, Sr. was born to the late Rev. Haswell Young and Georgiana (Cole) Young in Lincoln, Delaware.

As a young child, Gordon grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where at just 8-years of age, he met his future wife named Sonja Roberson, who unbeknownst to him would one day become his soulmate. Soon, his family would relocate to New Jersey, Georgia, and Nebraska.  Gordon graduated from Central High School (Omaha, NE) in 1972.

Gordon furthered his education at the University of Maryland – Eastern Shore (UMES), where he became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity INC, and reunited with the love of his life.  He graduated on May 15, 1976 with a Bachelors in Business Administration, and ten months later, on March 12, 1977, he was united in holy matrimony to his forever girlfriend, Sonja Roberson.

Gordon was lively, spontaneous and loved people and life in general.  In the professional world, he supported his family through his employment with UPS and later FedEx Ground for over 20 years.  Gordon retired in 2008 to devote full time to ministry.

Gordon was the proud father of four children, Gordon Jr, Miriam, Jason, and Shaynae, in whom he instilled the Word of God and reared in the fear and admonition of the Lord.  He lavished his love on his seven grandchildren and also had a deep love for his parents and siblings.  He was a dutiful son and demonstrated a deep respect for his parents, ensuring he remained a good disciple of the Word to “honor thy father and mother.” Gordon enjoyed family gatherings, date-night with his wife, and spending the holidays with his extended family members.  Each of these adventures were filled with a good meal and a good laugh.  Gordon was a consummate comedian, always ready to share a funny story.

Gordon’s walk with God was evident, even at a young age.  His strong faith was true, and he exhibited it in his daily walk with the Lord. He came from a family with a strong Christian background and he was a student of the Word.  Gordon received his call to ministry while serving at Emmanuel Baptist Church, where became a Deacon.  In 1989, he joined the First Baptist Church of Guilford and was elevated to the office of Minister while serving under the leadership of the late Rev. John Wright.

In 1997, he responded to the call of God to shepherd God’s flock and was installed into the office of Senior Pastor, at New Revelation Missionary Baptist Church, in Baltimore, Maryland. Possessing the great gift of leadership, he served tirelessly for 27 years, influencing those who had ears to hear, challenging the church to grow higher in God. Throughout his life, Gordon served the Kingdom of God through music and ministry. He sang in the choir, ministered in prisons, and taught in universities. Gordon’s Master of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity were obtained from Washington Saturday College, at Howard University.  Of all the ministries he served in, his greatest ministry was family.

Husband, Father, PopPop, Brother, Uncle, Pastor, Professor, and friend, Gordon wore many hats, was a man of integrity, and had a huge heart.  He shared his gift of love with his family and church family.  Above all titles and accolades, Gordon was committed to seeing souls saved and used by God. He remained steadfast and in God’s providence of time, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the Heavenly Father looked down on his son and whispered, “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of the Lord.”

Gordon’s rich legacy will live on through all he endeared himself to – his loving and devoted wife Sonja; his four children, Gordon Jr (Rosa), Miriam, Jason, Shaynae. Seven cherished grandchildren -Breyonna, Julian, Zalilah, Aiden, Cameron, Gabriel and Sebastian; and three sisters, Clara (Melvin) West, Karen, and Apryl, three sister in laws, Cynthia (Herman) Felder, Evelyn Dixon (Willie), Ruth Payne, and one brother-in-law, Thurston (Carolyn) Jones. A host of nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, and his church family will all remember this man of God, with memories that will always be cherished.
