Celebration of Life for James Hines

Obituary

James “Jimmy” Hines, a remarkable man with a big personality, a razor-sharp wit, and a heart of gold, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 27, 1945, to the late Fleming E. Hines and Lorraine Webb, Jimmy was the eldest of three children. Raised in a multi-generational household alongside his younger brother and sister, as well as first cousins, Jimmy’s childhood was shaped by love, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility.

From a young age, Jimmy showed a work ethic beyond his years. As a boy, while others were playing sports, he delivered groceries from the corner store, dutifully contributing his earnings to support his family. His industrious spirit and commitment to those he loved set him apart early on.

Jimmy’s education in the Philadelphia Public School System laid the groundwork for his brilliant career. He attended James G. Blaine Elementary School and graduated from Murrell Dobbins Technical High School in 1963. During high school, he worked and was mentored in a local repair shop where he excelled in electronics and circuitry. Those skills made him a neighborhood hero every time a television needed fixing. His expertise opened doors to a career that would see him thrive in telecommunications, satellite communication, and international network systems.

Following high school, Jimmy answered the call to serve, enlisting in the U.S. Army from 1964 to 1967. Specializing in communications and electronics, he supported teletype circuits and satellite network communications, earning an honorable discharge. He moved to Maryland and Jimmy’s expertise allowed him to join the Bendix Field Engineers Corp at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. He advanced to Senior Communications officer where he played a pivotal role in Apollo 11’s lunar satellite communications between President Nixon, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin just minutes after the astronauts landed on the moon in 1969—a legacy few can claim.

Jimmy’s life was a testament to hard work, determination, and the belief in bettering oneself and others. While building his career, he used his GI Bill benefits to graduate cum laude from Howard University with a degree in Political Science in 1975. His professional journey culminated in senior leadership at General Electric (GE) as Vice President of the Americas, a role that allowed him to leave an indelible mark as he traveled around the world.  He retired at the age of 55, but Jimmy continued to share his expertise through consulting roles and philanthropic efforts. He was extremely proud of the work and mission of Community Life Family Services (CFLS) and served on the Board of Directors for many years, where he significantly expanded programs that empowered families in need.

Maryland offered more than just work, Jimmy had the love and support of cousins who imparted sage wisdom like, “Work hard and always keep good credit”. He lived by those rules!  Jimmy was married to Jeanell James for 17 years and together they raised two wonderful daughters Ja-Na and Jocelyn. His two girls joined an older brother, James Anthony “Tony” Hines, from a prior relationship. Jimmy’s family joined Rock Creek Baptist Church in NW, Washington, DC, where he was baptized, and was an active member of the Deacon Board for many years.

Jimmy's zest for life was as boundless as his generosity. Whether exploring the world with his dear friend Delores Edwards, laughing over a game of bid whist, or passionately supporting his Cowboys (or later the Eagles), "The Good Guy" lived with purpose and passion; but let it be known, Jimmy did not tolerate foolishness or social injustices. He actively supported many causes, political campaigns and was proud to have participated in the 1995 Million Man March in Washington, DC. His adventures spanned six continents, each journey enriching his remarkable trove of stories. In Thailand, he marveled at the intricate architecture and the pristine beaches; In Alaska, he experienced the awe-inspiring glaciers and diverse wildlife. Morocco's historic city of Marrakech captivated his adventurous spirit while riding camels across the desert. South Africa's rich cultural heritage and natural beauty left a lasting impression on him. Cuba's vibrant scene resonated with his love for music. In Singapore, he enjoyed the diverse culinary delights, and the lush landscapes of the Caribbean provided a backdrop for relaxation and reflection. These global adventures not only broadened his horizons but also deepened his connections with his roots and people from all walks of life, embodying his belief in living fully and helping others to do the same.

Undoubtedly, family and friends were Jimmy’s greatest treasures. He loved getting together to have a meal, watch the game, tell some stories and share some laughs. As a devoted father to Tony Hines, Ja-Na Hines, Esq., and Dr. Jocelyn Hines, he embraced his role with unwavering love and support. His six grandchildren, who affectionately called him “PopPop,” held a special place in his heart. Together, they embarked on countless adventures—from zoo visits and school recitals to horseback rides and barbershop appointments—each moment radiating with his pride and signature smile.

When health challenges limited his ability to venture out, Jimmy's spirit remained resilient. His daughters, along with dedicated caretakers Verna (deceased) and Ms. Kenia, spent cherished hours by his side, engaging in heartfelt conversations, listening to music, and enjoying walks. Even as dementia altered his daily life, his essence remained unshaken—his humor sharp, his joy undimmed, his love unwavering.

Jimmy is survived by his children, Tony, Ja-Na, and Jocelyn; his cherished grandchildren: Sheena, Tanya, Josh, Janay, James, and Jules; his sister, Melva Shipley (DeWitte); his nephew, Brian Shipley; his Goddaughter, Karen Tolson; his longtime friend, Delores Edwards; and a host of extended family and friends who were blessed to know him. He was preceded in death by his beloved caretaker Verna, who became like family in his later years.

Jimmy Hines was a man who made every moment count and every life he touched better. His legacy of love, humor, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed, but we are eternally grateful for the joy, wisdom, and laughter he brought into our lives. He didn’t just live; he lived—and what a life it was!
