Obituary

Hyo Duck Chang, 78, of Marriottsville and formerly of Ellicott City and Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away in his sleep on August 27, 2023, after a long-fought battle with cancer. Son of the late Suk Wha and Myung Ok Chang, Hyo Duck was born on February 27, 1945, in Sariwon, North Korea and raised in Seoul, South Korea while the fledgling nation rebuilt itself after the Japanese occupation. After completing his undergraduate studies at Seoul National University, he emigrated to the United States where he received his Master of Science in Meteorology at the University of Maryland in College Park in 1979. He settled in Silver Spring with his wife, Young Sook, and they raised three children while he embarked on a long and accomplished career as a scientist for NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center until his retirement in 2014. During his tenure, he received several accolades for his research in support of various NASA programs.

Outside of the office, Hyo Duck was an avid fisherman and he enjoyed sharing this pastime with friends and family. Many summers were spent on the waters of the Eastern Shore with a fishing pole or crab net in his hand. He will always be known for his handyman and problem-solving skills. In his later years, he was known to be a doting and playful grandfather to his grandchildren. Hyo Duck was predeceased by his brother, Hyo Young Chang (Suh Bong) of Silver Spring. He is survived by his wife, Young Sook, his brother Hyo Sam (Young Pil) of Centreville, VA; his sisters: Hae Kyung (Jin Hoe) of Seoul, South Korea, and Keum Sook (Young Chul) of Clarksburg, MD; three children, Kathie (Jonathan) Oszust of Clifton, VA, Carolyn (Bruce) Audino of Southport, CT and Brian (Cindy) Chang of Fairfax, VA; and two granddaughters: Sofia and Elizabeth.

Funeral services will be held at Howell Funeral Home in Jessup, Maryland on September 6, 2023, at 10:30 AM and his interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Maryland at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be made in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.
