Obituary
Genelle Nicole Quarles Adrien was born on January 21, 1988, and is the oldest child of James and Cora Quarles. She was a beacon of light to everyone who knew her and lived a happy and fulfilling life. Genelle possessed a deep passion for family, travel, community, nature and the scenic routes life had to offer.
Genelle received her formal education within the Baltimore County Public school system and graduated from Owings Mills High School in 2006. Genelle was a host of her high school’s daily morning broadcast, a member of two honor societies, a clarinet player for the school’s band and orchestra, and an athlete that participated in multi-seasonal cheerleading and female golf. In addition, she earned an internship at WMAR television in Baltimore, MD.
After high school, she attended St. Johns University in Queens, NY and later transferred to the University of Maryland Baltimore County where she earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2011.
Genelle began her professional career at Burness, a public relations firm in Bethesda, MD. Throughout the remainder of her adult life, she was a committed and valued employee for several non-profit organizations including the United Nations Foundation. She also worked with media organizations including Meta (Facebook) and most recently Wikimedia. She eagerly shared her skill set as she volunteered for many charities.
Genelle entered into Holy Matrimony with Richard Adrien on September 26, 2014, and relocated to Bethesda, MD. The wedded couple finally settled in Greenbelt, MD and welcomed their daughter Lillianne in 2021 and their son Langston in 2023. Genelle’s commitment to her family was unmatched and prominent in every aspect of her life, as some may say, she was an example of what a loving and supporting wife and mother should be.
World travel was a driving force within Genelle’s life. She loved to explore various cultures and compare their customs with her own. She spent a semester studying abroad in Costa Rica. She would later travel for work and leisure to several places such as Switzerland, Panama, Kenya, France, Belgium. Recently, she visited Aruba while battling cancer and balancing her duties as a wife and mother simultaneously.
At an early age, she became deeply involved in her Godly faith originally at Wildwood Parkway UMC (Baltimore, MD) and later at St. Luke’s UMC (Reisterstown, MD). She participated on the youth choir, junior ushers, dance ministries and vacation bible school. Once she settled in suburban Washington, DC, she established membership at the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Rockville, MD where her faith continued to be nurtured and expanded.
Nature always had a prominent presence in her life. She enjoyed walking, hiking, biking, and swimming which provided her moments of tranquility and reflection. Her artistic talents were often displayed and admired through mediums such as drawing, painting, and photography. She was creative and often could envision beauty where others could not and repurpose objects/artifacts to provide a “greener” environment.
Genelle was a kind, soft spoken, respectful, intelligent, loving and selfless individual. She appeared to have the God given ability to stand in her own truths yet recognize and respect that others had the right to do so as well. Her daily affirmations and devotions were always well phrased, relative and insightful, sure to place a smile on the face and pondering in the mind.
Genelle leaves in Christ’s hands, her husband Richard and their two children Lilianne and Langston, parents, sisters Cheryl Carcel and Renee Quarles, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
