In Loving Memory of David Dwight Powers
January 14, 1958 – December 13, 2024
With heavy hearts, we gather to honor the life of David Dwight Powers, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Born on January 14, 1958, to Gene Powers and Ruth Sheppard in New York, New York. He was the firstborn child. Educated in the New York public school system, he would enter the U. S. Marine Corps shortly after graduating high school. David lived a life full of love, passion, and purpose.
On December 13, 2024, he departed this world after a long, courageous health battle, leaving a legacy of compassion, strength, and countless cherished memories. Despite his challenges, he held on to hope and made plans for the future. David dreamt of moving to Georgia and traveling with his dear wife, Tamara Jenkins Powers, and looked forward to spending more time with his daughter, Alayna Powers, whom he cherished. These dreams reflected the deep love and devotion he had for his family.
He was also passionate about law enforcement and found significant meaning in supporting his community through service and justice. David was a certified National Rifle Association firearms instructor who taught numerous colleagues and students how to qualify with a weapon in concert with firearms safety. He enjoyed sports, especially good games of basketball and football. Above all, David enjoyed life to the fullest, implementing the motto “You work hard to play hard,” as reflected in his and his wife’s former membership in the Extraordinary Life Church, Glen Burnie, MD.
His siblings also survive David: Helen Powers, Eulanda Powers, Andre Woodson, Michael Woodson, and Kizzy. In addition to his siblings, David leaves behind a father-in-law (Wesley John Jenkins), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews to honor his memory.
As we bid farewell to David, we take comfort in the knowledge that he is with the Lord. His spirit will forever live on in those David loved and loved him. May his legacy of love, kindness, and joy inspire us. Rest in peace, David Dwight Powers. We will miss you beyond words.
